Gardening is a lifelong journey of learning and growth! Whether you're a novice or experienced gardener, our Urban Roots Garden Education series offers small, in-person classes to expand your skills and confidence growing in a high-desert urban climate. From planning your garden to putting it to bed, these classes work together to provide a comprehensive overview of organic gardening. Classes can be taken individually or join us for the whole series. Let’s grow together!

How to Start Seeds Class
It may be cold and snowy still, but the gardening season is just around the corner. Late winter is the perfect time to plant the seeds for your spring garden. It’s more cost-effective than buying seedlings, and you can grow unusual varieties that you may not find elsewhere. Learn the when, where, why, and how of starting seeds and leave with the confidence to grow your own garden from seed. Plus, get access to our extensive free seed library at the end of class!

Planning Your Garden Workshop
Learn the ins and outs of planning your growing space from a design perspective. We’ll center your own unique garden goals and share best practices and pain points. You’ll walk away from this workshop with a garden plan for the upcoming growing season, along with ideas to create a sense of wonder and joy throughout.

Basics of Organic Gardening Class
Want to learn how to grow in the high-desert climate of Colorado? This class explores the most important aspects of organic gardening in metro Denver, including garden planning, planting from seed, transplanting seedlings, soil preparation, water conservation, harvesting, and an overview of cool and warm season crops.

Maintaining Your Garden Class
So you’ve planted a garden — now what? Learn how to set up your garden for success throughout the challenging summer months. We’ll discuss best management practices for crop health, including healthy soil, watering, identifying pests and diseases, crop rotation, companion planting, attracting beneficial insects, and distinguishing beneficial from pest insects. We’ll also discuss tips for keeping your garden alive in the heat of summer.

Season Extension Class
Colorado’s gardening season is late summer/early fall is a time of big transition. Learn best practices for maintaining and harvesting warm season crops, strategies to revitalize the soil and select appropriate varieties of cool weather crops that do well in early fall. We’ll also discuss cover crops, mulching, and a variety of season extension tools.

Putting the Garden to Bed Class
The end of the gardening season is a time of reflection and an invitation to plan for next year’s garden. Learn ways you can put your garden to bed, including using cover crops, renewing soil through various methods of composting, cleaning up leftover annual plant materials, selecting specific varieties of crops that can be grown in the overwintering fall garden, care tips for perennial flowers and herbs, along with weed management techniques. Resources for favorite garden catalogs will also be shared.
